Since "The Scholars" written by Wu Jingzi in the18thcentury, the world for itsresearch has never stopped. As a representative of classical Chinese vernacular novels,"The scholars" by its wonderful plot and concise vernacular style is highly regardedby the researchers; at the same time, as the unique perspective and structure,the novelbecomes a exception which can’t be copied. From the content point of view,we knowthat the novel orders imperial examination as its main content.It is the first novel fullsense of the imperial examination. From a structural point of view,the novel iscomposed of numerous short pieces. The special content and structure make theemergence of a large number of characters possible in the novel. A multitude ofcharacters naturally become the focus in the study of the novel. Researchers havedone lots of researches about the characters of "The Scholars".In this paper, we’ll start with the characters who called “the outsider of theimperial examination”,on the basis of previous studies we found the particularity ofthis type of image in the novel "the scholars". So this article will give “the outsider ofthe imperial examination” descriptive definition and focuses on the characteristics ofthis kind of image to classify them. At the same time, we’ll explore the reasons thecharacters appear in the novel and the influence of characters. In addition to this, webriefly discuss the emergence of such characters on the impact of novel creation.Though “the outsider of the imperial examination” is not the main part of thecharacters in "The Scholars", our study of this kind of image will provide certain helpto the research concerning the character image.
