New Exploration Of Feng Youlan’s Realm Of Life

Feng Youlan,who devoted his entire life in the teaching and research work of the Philosophical basic theory and history, is one of the most outstanding philosopher throughout modern Chinese history. Till now,people still speak highly on Feng, especially his awesome achievement of Philosophy research.In 1930 s,Feng founded the new Neo Confucianism system by transformed the traditional Philosophy system using the analytic method he learned from western Philosophy system.As learning from the natural theory of Zhuang Zi,The traditional Confucian utilitarianism,Pre Qin Confucianism,and the Cultivation Theory, the Mysticism,the Agnosticism of Neo Confucianism of song and Ming Dynasties, he created his famous academic view “the four states of people’s thought”which shows people’s different view on the meaning of life,that is for living,for utility,for morality,or for god in the universe.There is no doubt that Feng’s Philosophy theory “the Realm of Life” is one of the most distinguished Philosophy theory throughout the Chinese Philosophy history.Feng’s ”the Realm of Life”integrated the realm of life theory of Chinese classical philosophy,especially Confucianism,Daoism and Buddhism.But there are some defects of Feng’s theory.One is that his theory contains too much about Metaphysics which has some inherent limitations.And the other is that the definition of utility and morality in his theory is conservative.This article talks about the strong points and some defects of Feng’s “the Realm of Life” by making a study of the formation history and connotation of “the Realm of Life”,then proposes some solutions to avoid these defects.
