The Anti-Christian Movement occurred in the 1920s was a national-scale cultural and political movement. As the fastest growing, most intense reaction province in this nationwide movement, Hunan had a positive response and gave a impetus to it. The reasons of the rise of the Anti-Christian Movement in Hunan as follows:First, early 20th century, continuous development of Christianity which color with power politics in Hunan; seconds, changes in religious ideas in Hunan; third, the upsurge of nationalist movements and influence of local political factors. The Anti-Christian Movement in Hunan had experienced three stages of development, including a rise, development, climax to fall. With students, intellectuals, political parties and other organizations taken part into this movement. There was a great development in the depth, breadth of the movement, especially in the May 30th Movement (1925)and the Northern Expedition (1926-1927), it get a further rise.The Anti-Christian Movement in Hunan had its unique aspects: growing fast, strong nationalist, played a great role in promoting the nationwide Anti-Christian Movement. But the Anti-Christian Movement in Hunan also had some deficiencies:First, the publicity theory were not mature enough,moreover, the behavior of the anti-Christian was too radical. The Anti-Christian Movement in Hunan brought great impact to the local politics and diplomacy. On the other side, the movement had a big crush to the Church of Hunan, and it also gave the Christianity in Hunan a chance of self adjustment and indigenization.
