In the field of art design, Kaiti not only plays an indispensible role in the development of font, but is also a fundamental visual symbol in traditional calligraphy. Meanwhile, it is an epitome of Chinese spirit as an aesthetic representative in contemporary font design. By sorting out the routine of its development, it could be easier for us to find out the hidden pattern and to apply this font wisely and properly in modern art design.Kaiti originated from the changing of traditional font style to a simpler one which was easier to write at the end of Han dynasty. Kaiti as a formal font style had not been established and became a popular one until Tang dynasty through the study of calligraphers. With the invention of typography, Kaiti had become a part of art design. Later on, Song dynasty had witnessed the fall of Kaiti. However, the new century has brought new challenges and opportunities to this time-honored font in Chinese history. The changing of Kaiti has closely related to politics, culture and material. Politics could influence culture, and culture could then have an impact on social value and aesthetic taste that could cause the change of form of font as well as the value it reflects. The reform of material leads to the change in medium, the way of spreading, and design. In all, there would not be the creation, inheritance and renovation of Kaiti without the wisdom and diligence of Chinese people.
