The masterpiece Remembrance of Things Past written by Marcel Proust who is the French modernist writer in twentieth century, shows us a complicated and exquisite picture which reflecting the life of French in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. The best part of this novel is the delicate and profound psychology description of the numerous distinctive characters and the most vivid part is the description of the sick or abnormal psychology. With the Michel Foucault’s theory, the paper analyzes and interprets the morbid characters in Remembrance of Things Past. The morbid part in this novel mainly reflects from two protagonists, the narrator Marcel and Baron de Charlus. Since, the two characters ’status is important and the description of them occupies a lot of space in this monumental novel. Undoubtedly, the analysis and research of the two characters morbid psychology is extremely meaning. The narrator Marcel is a sickly, extremely sensitive, lonely, emotional and even crazy person. He puts himself in his own and other people’s feeling cage. Meanwhile, he takes his girlfriend Albertine back to his apartment in Paris, arrests her like a prisoner and punishes her by a series of control measures. The prison-like life, existed everywhere and any time, provides a mutual tyrannical morbid hotbed for Marcel to control and anti-controlhis girlfriend Albertine. Baron de Charlus’ s morbid psychology is the most obvious, focus and representative in Proust’s portrayed characters.Baron’s morbid psychology or abnormal psychology first renders by crazy, and the abnormal crazy reflects in his eyes, language, behavior and feelings. Baron’s egregious psychological feeling is homosexuality which is considered as a morbid psychology. Baron’s morbid psychology is also presented by his abused behavior and such a direct and violent ultimate experience is despised by the people in the world.Michel Foucault is one of the most important twentieth century modernists, his deconstruction and critics to the power, morality and knowledge of modern society, is sharp. Foucault has a preference to special and remote area such as psychosis, prison and sex. He uses these elements to doubt the society and the society structures of it. He points out that the individual in the modern society is only the subject discussed by the power, morality and knowledge and the object which is butchered. Therefore, everyone repeatedly doubts society and themselves. Foucault hopes that individuals can get freedom from the pasted cage and artistically experience the life which makes the care for their own life to be the core. With Foucault’s theory, we analyze that crazy, abused, homosexuality represented by the narrator Michel and Baron de Charlus which are regarded as morbid psychology and behavior by modern society is anunique and cherished way to experience life rather than a sick and abnormal way. At the same time, we finally found that the writer Marcel Proust’s own life experience cleverly written into the two main characters:the narrator Marcel is the Proust’s dominant image and Baron de Charlus is his hidden image. Absolutely, Proust’s morbid psychology written in his novel is affected by the psychology writing under the historical and social background inevitably, and the psychology writing of guided survival aesthetics, not only the survival writing of himself.
