A Study On The Theme Of Bildung In Lin Yutang’s Novels

In the order of the "Moment in Peking", Lin Yutang talked about the growth of young people, and some publishers are also concerned about it. Bildungsroman and research originated in the West, but it does not mean that there are no growth writing in China. Compared with others’ growth writing, Lin Yutang’s difference lies in the grown heroes’ s "re-grow". What he want to express is not a child or adolescent removal their ignorance and successfully enter the adult society. Instead, the hero in his novels is not a general sense of "maturity", they should out of the shackles of civilization and find their true self. At the same time, Lin Yutang provides a second state that we call it “Habitat Freedom” to those awakening people. In that realm, people can get a great spiritual freedom, although they live in the society with others. No matter what level, the growing hero’s character and spirit are both belong to Bakhtin’s "variable" theory, but the "change" in Lin Yutang’s novels are different.The text is divided into three chapters, they are reasons of growth writing, the connotation of growth and the uniqueness of growth writing.Contents of the first chapter are some argumentation about the reasons of growth writing, they are builds on the author’s intentions. Out of the ideal personality seeking, Lin began to writing his growing hero. The traits of ideal personality provide the direction to the growing hero. Meanwhile, those traits would let people get happiness and joy in the earthly. So it would say that writing growth is out of concern for the secular growth of human survival.The second chapter is based on the first one, in this section, the article discussed the connotation of growth in Lin Yutang’s novels. For these two reasons, Lin let his hero do some meaningful life activities, those activities are important revealing to connotation of growth. These "activities" meaning that the individual person how to rush out of the tight encirclement from the social culture and find their real self. In order to make this self can exist in the world safely, they need to enter into the spirit world of liberty.What the third chapter talk about is that the characteristic of Lin Yutang’s growth writing. The writer will consider the growth writing in the view of modern literature. The article make a comparison between Lin Yutang and other writers, such as Shen Congwen and writers of the Left- wing Literature. Through the comparison and analysis, heroes of Lin Yutang are nourished by both natural and worldly wisdom. They are growing under the two guiders. For the writing of growth, Lin Yutang is always around the personal self. This self refers both to the ordinary individual life, it also has the self life experience of the author. That is defferent from the Left- wing Literature. From the pursuit of the ideal personality, the growing up theme writing also penetrate into the pursuit of the ideal cultural patterns.
