Hu Shi is the representative figure of The New Redology.He made the tremendous contribution to the development of redology.He wrote a total of 124 articles about A Dream of Red Mansions.He wrote a letter before he died.The content of the letter is still the redology.The evaluations of Hu Shi about A Dream of Red Mansions are numerous and extensive.During The May Fourth New Culture Movement Period,Hu Shi said A Dream of Red Mansions is a masterpiece. And he took the novel as the standard Chinese language teaching materials. He had positive words for A Dream of Red Mansions.However, since the 1930s,Hu Shi began to condemn the novel severely.He criticized the novel is worthless.Why his views are so different? In this paper, first of all, studying the contributions and problems of Hu Shi and the New Redology.Secondly,combing some major evaluations at different times about A Dream of Red Mansions from Hu Shi.Thirdly,Analysing several important factors that had influenced Hu Shi’s evaluations of A Dream of Red Mansions.Fourthly,deciphering the reasons that why had Hu Shi fell into some sorts of contradictory dilemma because of A Dream of Red Mansions druing his later years.In summary,trying to work out the real answer to Hu Shi and the zhe strange phenomenon in the history of redo logy.
