An Analysis On The Application Of Chinese Elements Of Hollywood Movies

From the beginning of the nineteenth century, Hollywood has created an artistic heaven for many filmmakers. With the constant change and development of more than a century, the Hollywood movies have already become the core of the world films. Since twentieth century, Chinese elements have get the attention of Hollywood movie,especially from the beginning of the 90’s. Gradually, Chinese actors, Chinese Kung Fu, Chinese stories and Chinese folk turns into the Hollywood movies. This phenomenon shows that the overall strength of Chinese ascension brings the development to the communication of culture.And Chinese market has huge potential and attractive.However,we can find that,in the early days of Hollywood movies,the application of Chinese element is not so good as now.This phenomenon is due to the time of the Chinese political situation to a large extent.But Hollywood movies are still not give up misunderstanding and degrading the Chinese element now.They just change the direct expression to the hidden method.Therefore, we can not only see the side of praise but also pay attention to the side of the real purpose of it.We should reflect on the results of the foreign cultural communication.This paper summed up the Chinese elements which shaped by the Hollywood from the late nineteenth century to the twentieth century by combs the history of Hollywood movies.There are some typical Chinese images such as Li Hongzhang of the documentary, Fu Manzhou of the cafetiere films, Charlie Chen, the Chinese farmers during the World War II,and the Dr.No during the Cold War.During the twentieth century, the revival of Chinese elements in the Hollywood movies brought the Chinese Kung Fu wave to the western society. In addition,this paper also summarized the application of Chinese elements by showing the mysterious ancient country, Kung Fu culture, religion pure land, and the integration of classical and modern.Based on these process and characteristics, the paper analysis the causes from three aspects which are political, economic, social and cultural. Among them, the political factor is due to the different historical period and political diplomatic relations and the Pseudo Environment created by the American mainstream ideology,the economic factor is the result of reducing the cost of promotion overseas and improve the box-office revenues,the factors of social culture is due to the long history of Chinese culture which brings the inspiration to Hollywood.And those movies that used to distort the Chinese image aredue to the American cultural hegemony.Finally, the paper draws some implications to the Chinese movies overseas development. We should expand our cultural exchange space,enhance the cultural proximity and guard to international standards by cultural fusion in Chinese movies.In general, Chinese movies not only to study the application of Chinese elements in Hollywood movies, but also to learn the successful experience of Hollywood movies over the years. Only in this way, Chinese movies can break the prejudice in the future of the movie industry, building a equal platform of cultural exchange, make excellent Chinese culture win the artistic merit of the world.
