An Analysis Of Chinese Elements In Hollywood Movies Under The Background Of Globalization

The interaction between different cultures enhances multiculturalization andglobalization. The conflicts and blend of the west and oriental cultures offers us everychallenges and opportunities. The Cross-Cultural Communication involves twoaspects: language capability and cultural cognition. The research on the former aspecthas wildly made and known by people, but the deficiency in cultural cognition has notcaused due attention. Culture is a unique evolution of form possessed by humanbeings, which has much to do with the human’s cognition. Some foreign expertsproposed that culture and cognition can be the angle of view for each other in theform of evolution, which indicates we can analyze culture from the perspective ofcognition and vice versa.Hollywood is the best template for its powerful cultural offensive on the research ofculture. Recently, Hollywood frequently adopting Chinese elements offers again andagain conversation between American an Chinese cultures. It forges a period for thetwo cultures’ communication from which produces the new cultural qualities andcultural growing points.This paper adopts the methods of documents, comparison and contrast and caseanalysis to make a study on the Chinese male and female images and typical symbolsin Hollywood and finds that the dimension of similarity and difference for self cultureand other cultures is greatly influenced by many invisible cultural elements such ashistory, politics and economy, philosophy and religion. Based on the brief survey ofthe Chinese elements in Hollywood, this paper is aimed at analyzing its causes offormation and its corresponding cultural value under the guide of the invisible factors.Meanwhile, this paper further unscrambles the similarities and distinctions betweenthe American culture and Chinese culture represented by the Chinese elements in theHollywood by applying Hofstede’s Cultural Dimension and Kluckhohn andStrodtbek’s Value Orientation.After a series of studies, this paper concludes that Hollywood adopting Chineseelements reflects a mutual trend of the globalization of the local cultures and thelocalization of the globalized culture and a two-way process between the dominant culture and the weak culture. Chinese elements in Hollywood have experienced a longperiod from the full negative stage to a gradually positive and objective stage, duringwhich period it shows American othering Chinese traditional culture for the sake ofprofit, a typical Orientalism action which reveals American cultural hegemonies. Onthe other hand, we can see the irreplaceable roles Chinese elements play in theinternational cultural stage with China’s speeding comprehensive national power. Insuch an unprecedented cultural background, we are supposed to remain calm andobjective, lay more emphasis on our Chinese traditional culture, absord the best andthe proper in other cultures and seek for an equal and imperial opportunity toexchange our cultures in a mutual way.
