The object of this thesis is the novel Seed of Hope. It’s written by an Australian writer Roz Baker. This thesis analyzes the characters’ dialogues in the novel Seed of Hope, to explain the strategies that the author adopted during the process of translation under the guidance of Conversational Implicature Theory..The concept of "conversational implicature" was first proposed by American linguist H.P.Grice. Grice believed that both sides should follow a principle, which he named "Cooperative Principle". However, speakers don’t always follow it. Dialogues happen in social circumstances, so if speakers violate the principle, they do it to arrive at a common aim. In this case, there must be implications under the words. We call this kind of implicature "conversational implicature". Geoffrey Leech proposed "Politeness Principle" as supplementary. The two principles provide strong theoretical basis for analysis of conversational implicature.Upon summary of previous studies and analysis of real examples, this thesis discusses the importance of conversational implicature and how to reproduce them during the process of fictional dialogue translation. The author first introduces how to find the hidden meanings on the basis of Cooperative Principle and Politeness Principle. Then, the author makes a classification about the strategies adopted in the translation process. The practical significance of this thesis lies in the fact that applying the "Conversational Implicature" Theory to translation practice can help translators understand conversational implicatures and convey them to the target text accurately. In this way, target language readers can understand and appreciate foreign fictions better.
