In the recent years, with rapid economy growth and development of relationship between China and Russia, the importance of business communication has also increased. These days the greatest part of all international business transactions is being conducted by the means of business letters. It is well known, that business correspondence is an essential part of international business communication, and its successful translation is the key to successful solicitation of business. However, the improper language usage can negatively influence the result of any business transaction. Due to the differences in language and culture, there is a great possibility that such linguistic phenomena as pragmatic failures will appear in business letters translated from Russian to Chinese. In order to improve the effectiveness of business communication between two great countries, it is necessary to conduct a research on pragmatic failures in RussiantoChinese business correspondence.The thesis aims to analyze pragmatic failures in business letters translated from Russian to Chinese, including the basic types of pragmatic failures found in the researched materials, and also proposes some measures to reduce pragmatic failures in written business communication. The main purpose of this research is to find a better way of Russian to Chinese business correspondence translation and to improve the effectiveness of business transactions between two countries.The concept of pragmatic failures in business letters described in this paper is based on the ideas of the British linguist Jenny Thomas, Chinese linguist TangHongFang (唐红芳) and Russian linguist Tatiana Larina. The research consists of three stages:classification of pragmatic failures, definition of causes of pragmatic failures, description of measures to reduce pragmatic failures in RussiantoChinese business correspondence.Business letters are a very active unit of language communication basis; they possess a strong communicative purpose, and special communicative object. It goes without saying, that the study of Russian to Chinese business letter translation will involve the study of special features and rules of business letter writing in both languages. This paper will try to analyze pragmatic failures in Russian to Chinese business letters based on special features and differences of those two languages. It had been proved that neglecting special language features communication context and cultural factors are the main causes of pragmatic failures in business letter translation.
