Talk show not only provides information, but also involves interpersonal communication between host, guest and audiences. Speakers voice their attitudes and viewpoints in order to influence addressees. As semi-institutional discourse, talk show language should be objective to some extent. Various attitudes and viewpoints are presented through heteroglossic resources.The engagement framework, especially the entertain category is specified in this paper. This thesis draws upon analytical procedures and tools from SFL and Appraisal Theory to conduct in-depth analysis of voicing values in English talk show. Heteroglossic contraction and expansion resources in talk show discourse are analyzed respectively.This paper collects ten episodes of talk shows from NBC, CBS, ABC and Fox as research materials. The analysis shows that English talk show texts are heteroglossic; various attitudes and viewpoints are negotiated with each other through the manipulation of heteroglossic resources; voicing values in English talk shows are realized mainly by Disclaim, Modality and Acknowledge; there are similarities and differences between hosts and guests in choosing engagement resources.
