Report On Translation Of Chinese Culturology Chapter 1-2

Nowadays, the Chinese culture makes a bigger and bigger influence on the world. It is worth thinking about how to spreading the Chinese culture effectively to the outside. And in the process of spreading the Chinese culture, it is another important topic to translate well the books related to the Chinese culture.The source text of the translation involved in this translation report is selected from Chinese Culturology, which was written by Qin Deqing and published in 2015. The source texts include Chapter One (Theoretical construction of the discipline) and Chapter Two (The theoretical construction of Chinese Culturology) from Part One (Theoretical construction of the discipline) of the book. The selected texts mainly consist of expository writing, which gives a fairly detailed explanation on the related concepts and theoretical knowledge of the Chinese Culturology; in addition, the texts provide definition of quite a few concepts related to Chinese Culturology.In this report, the author combines specific examples and the functional equivalence theory, and directing at the important and difficult points in the translation, analyzes how the author handles them through adopting all kinds of methods in the process of translating Chapter One and Chapter Two of the book Chinese Culturology. In the former part of this report, the author introduces the background and the significance of this translation practice, analyzes the main content and the language features of the original text of this translation practice, introduces the theoretical basis of this translation practice, namely Nida’s functional equivalence theory, and describes the author’s preparation before this translation practice. And then, the author bases the report on Nida’s functional equivalence theory, combines specific translation instances, and analyzes how the author adopts some translation skills to handle the important and difficult points in the process of this translation practice, the skills including amplification, omission, conversion, shifting, combination, punctuation and division; in addition, some other issues such as how to deal with the translation of domestic ancient books and records and how to back-translate quotations from foreign literature. Through this translation practice, the author becomes more proficient in the ability of appkying some translation skills, acquires some new matters needing attention in translation, and understands the importance of team cooperation. Meanwhile, the author has been aware of the shortcomings in this translation practice, for example, some translation is not natural enough. To improve this, the author is determined to urge myself to strengthen the study on English.
