With the development of Japanese economy, trade frictions appear between America and Japan after the Second World War, which become more and more intense afterwards. During the Carter years, the number of trade tensions between America and Japan keeps escalating, and the typical of which are in the businesses of steel automobile, and color TV. This paper consists of three parts: introduction, body and conclusion.The introduction section mainly introduces the domestic and international study findings regarding this subject, and analyzes limitations and significance in this research.The first section of the body describes the historical evolution of trade frictions between America and Japan from the end of the Second World War to the beginning of the Carter years. Japan gradually recovers from the worst postwar recession, which is backed by the United State. However, with the change of Japanese trading status, trade frictions appear between the two countries. Therefore, this part discusses the economic development situations and the process of trade development in America and Japan from the end of the Second World War to the beginning of the Carter years.The second section of the body discusses the reason for the upgrading of trade frictions between the two countries and the process in which how America deals with trade frictions. It is concluded that the frictions are due to different trading strategies and developing policies, as well as unbalanced economic development conditions between the two countries. Through the interpretation of FRUS, this part also presents the process of how America deals with trade frictions and the results of the treatments.The third section of the body lists the author’s views regarding the trade frictions between America and Japan during the period when Carter took office, which consist of some thoughts about free trade policies and economic and foreign policies in the US, as well as inspirations from the ways of how America handles trade frictions.The last section discusses the conclusions towards the trade frictions between America and Japan during the Carter years, and the lessons emerged from these events, including the ways of dealing with diplomatic allies, and the reason why China should properly handle trade frictions to increase the competitiveness of domestic enterprises.
