This is a translation report developed on the translation of Introduction and Chapter seven(Psychodynamics of racialised subjectivity) of Beyond the masks: Race, Gender and Subjectivity. The selected chapters are 11,000 words. It is an academic book by Amina Mama, a Nigerian-British writer, feminist and critic. Her main academic interests are in post-colonialism, militarist and gender studies, etc. Beyond the masks: Race, Gender and Subjectivity is one of her best known works and has not had Chinese translation in China by far.The selected chapters mainly discuss, in the particular social circumstances of 1980 s and 1990 s Britain, how contemporary black women constructed their own subjectivities through the role of race and gender played by the contradictions in the course of their personal development. Through the historical and social material provided by black women it explored how they creatively transform themselves yet remain influenced by some of the traditional discourses which have historically positioned black women living in Western Europe. Through the exploration of the subjectivities of a number of black women, the writer developed a theorization of subjectivity.Instructed by Nida’s functional equivalence theory the translator discusses the selected translation strategies which are rightly based on the theory in question. This report also includes the preparation before translation and the application of different translation skills to some specific examples. In the end, the translator concludes problems and the experience during the translating process. This translation report is a kind of test of acquired translation knowledge and a guideline for further study. Though this the translator not only knows of shortcomings but also accumulates some experience. So that the translator’s level has been improved greatly which lays a solid foundation for the future career of translation.
