"Whirling Dance" is a dizi concerto composed in 2007 by renowned composer Zhong Yao Guang. The piece was first written for flute with Chinese Orchestra and was premiered by Sharon Bezaly. In 2009, the piece was rearranged into a Dizi (Bamboo Flute) Concerto by Chen Zhong Shen and Dai Ya. "Whirling Dance" was selected as set piece for the 17th Taipei National Instrumental Competition in 2010. Known for this virtuosity, the piece is arguably one of the most challenging contemporary dizi works that have been written in recent years. This research paper aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the piece through a combination of my own interpretation of the composer’s intentions and ideas, with what I have gathered from my performance experience. Through this I hope to gather a deeper understanding of the piece, exploring every gesture and nuance within it.
