This thesis uses corpus linguistics and the researching method of semantic prosody and colligations. The author gives the definitions of semantic prosody and colligations and summarizes the researching history of the learners aboard and at home. By using the corpus Wordsmith 6.0, the author lists the high-frequency words in the novel and analyzes the verbal features of the semantic prosody and colligations, then selects three high-frequency verbs: happen, cause and effect. The purpose of the author is by corpus retrieving, studies the semantic prosody and colligations of the three high-frequency verbs based on the data and tables one by one, it is in order to analyze the inevitability of Tess’ tragedy.The author finds that: there is a close relationship between semantic prosody and colligations, they supplement and restrict each other, the author combines them together, it is more persuasive. If the words are under different contexts, the semantic prosody and colligations are quite different. By analyzing the data selected by corpus Wordsmith 6.0, it is easy to find that: negative semantic prosody and colligations are widely used, neutral semantic prosody and colligations are less than negative semantic prosody and colligations, and positive semantic prosody and colligations are rarely used in this thesis, that is to say, the author of the novel wants to build the negative atmosphere in order to indicate the inevitability of Tess’ tragedy.This thesis, through the analysis of the high-frequency words appearing in the novel, studies the verbal features in Tess of the D’ Urbervilles from the perspective of semantic prosody and colligation. This research finds out a new way to study the literary works, and makes a contribution to analyzing the lemma of the novel more profoundly.
