Semantic prosody situates words in a certain language environment and pays special attention to the meaning of words in use, which is of great significance to the research on Chinese ontology and teaching Chinese as a foreign language. Divergent from the qualitative analysis commonly adopted in previous studies on vocabulary mixed color, emotional color and pragmatic color, semantic prosody conducts quantitative analysis of corpus data and analyzes the emotional tendency, subjectivity, and objectivity of words and their matches in specific contexts from the perspective of pragmatics research. Therefore, deepening the study of words rhymes will contribute to finding new breakthrough points in teaching vocabulary.Building on previous research findings and semantic-prosody-related theories, this research studies speculative tone adverbs by drawing upon data from a large-scale corpus. More specifically, this research focuses on four representative tone adverbs, namely, the “bi” category to explore the characteristics of words rhyme and their influencing factors.Structurally, this master thesis is divided into seven sections, with the main body devoted to address four aspects of the “bi” category of modal adverbs.1. Through quantitatively accessing the high-frequency co-occurrence words, the first section concludes and analyzes the connection forms of each the “bi” category of modal adverb.2. Based on the delineation of the original meaning of the “bi” category of modal adverbs and the instruction significance, as well as their class coupling and semantic features of words collocation, the section analyzes semantic trend of the “bi” category of modal adverbs.3. Based on the analysis of the corpus, the third section examines the subjectivity of the the “bi” category of modal adverbs from the perspective of the speaker, emotion and cognition.4. Through studying the corpus from the perspective of attitudinal meaning, the fourth section investigates the internal differences with regard to the intensity of the “bi” category of modal adverbs and further explores the Semantic prosody pattern of the “bi” category.
