As a unique collections of stories, Old Tales Retold has been attracting the attentions of Lu Xun research scholars recently, in which the issue of “cunning” constantly been the focus. This paper regards cunning as the most important part in the collections which not only be penetrated in the language and structure of this novel, but also help to build special art characteristics which embodies the profundity of Lu Xun’s thoughts. The primary purpose of the paper is to analyze and discuss the using art of cunning from the view of rhetoric, thought view, and view of existence respectively. By combining the irony in rhetoric, the humor of thinking, the general writing circumstance during the Republic of China period and Lu Xun’s literary concept, the paper interprets the distinct artistic feature of Old Tales Retold.The paper is composed of introduction, text, and the conclusion.The first part is introduction, reviewing the research status of cunning and putting forward the prospect of this research.The second part consists of three sections. First, by combining the cunning and irony from the view of rhetoric, the paper offers an analysis from ironic angle,including of ironic in language and ironic in structure. Second, the paper analyzes Old Tales Retold by humor theory from the thought view, pointing out the unique humor of Lu Xun which is different from other scholars. Third, to elaborate the cunning from the view of existence,the research proposes a combination of Lu Xun’s early writing intentions, “the famous morality” of scholars in Republic of China, and the unique view of existence in Lu Xun, who was deemed as a spiritual warrior.The third part is conclusion, summarizing above points, and indicating the vital importance of researching cunning in the present times.
