The Yellow River basin is the very important cradle of agricultural civilization in China;that the splendid Yellow River civilization was gestated on the basis of highly developed agricultural civilization.As the most main forms of Chinese civilization,the Yellow River civilization’s main characteristic is agricultural early maturity.Food crops were early cultivated,domesticated and large-scale grown by the people of the Yellow River basin;and in these food crops,the millet soon became one of the important food crops.However,relying on the progress of agricultural production and food processing technology,the wheat gradually replaced millet as the Yellow River’s main food crops.Millet and wheat crops in the Yellow River in the change of the growth and decline of the status,is not only meet the needs of the people production and living standard improvingis, also the result of the Han Dynasty government vigorously promoted.This paper systematically researches that the millet and wheat planted in the pre-Qin to Han period use changes and its ebb and flow,and on this basis in the Yellow River basin gradually replace corn and wheat were also discussed to promote.There are three chapters in this dissertation.Firstly,the paper summarizes the composition of food crops in the ancient China’s Yellow River basin;describes the formation of the five cereals’ concept and the introduction of food crops;separately explains rice,millet,wheat and beans’ positions in different times.Secondly,the paper expounds the origin of millet and wheat crops,combs and analyzes the millet and wheat’s remains of PeiLigang culture period,Magnetic mountain culture period,Yangshao culture period,Four Dam culture period,Longshan culture period,horse home kiln and Qi culture period.It discusses the millet and wheat crops’ ebb and flow during Xia to Han period in detail,and explains their cultivation and promotion during the prehistoric period to Han dynasty.Lastly, this paper discusses the causes of wheat’s rise and millet’s decline from natural environment,eating way,production technology,construction of irrigation works,improvement of area yield of wheat and the Han dynasty government’s attention.
