| Discourse markers have been studied by domestic and foreign scholars in last several years. Discourse markers are generally employed in daily conversation where a good instruction can help acquire coherence. Scholars in this domain have researched it from a number of different views of discourse marker, like the perspective of pragmatics and the perspective of cognitive-linguistics. As for the viewpoint of coherence theory, there are relatively inadequate researches. In addition, most researches of discourse markers come from foreign countries, but there are few researches from our own country. From the perspective of coherence theory, this paper can be concluded that well can both highlight interpersonal relationship and convey communicative attitude and emotion in coherence discourse. Well occurs in high frequency in spoken English. In this paper, discourse marker well will be described and analyzed in details.Desperate Housewives used to be the world’s highest rating play. The name of this play—Desperate Housewives—has rapidly become a cultural phenomenon, which drove the trend of desperate, crazy housewife in America through newspapers, magazines and talk shows. In this TV series, there are a great many discourse markers with discourse functions and well occurred in a high frequency. Therefore, Desperate Housewives is appropriate for analyzing discourse markers. A corpus retrieval software called HyConc was used to search the using-frequency of discourse marker well in the script of Desperate Housewives Season 1to describe the functions of highlighting interpersonal relationship and conveying communicative attitude and emotion in coherence discourse.For this reason, there is tremendous theoretical significance and practical value in the research. This paper can be applied in deeper and further studies of the practice of discourse marker well. It also may arouse more interests in the research of discourse markers and further refinement will apply more analytical researches. |
