Higher vocational education is the basis of cultivating technology applied talents. It decides whether the country can form strengthening and sustainable technology in the international competition. National Education Plan(2010-2020) clearly puts forward: “By 2020, our country will form the modern vocational education system which will adapt the transformation of economic development model and industrial restructuring. It will embody a concept of life-long education and the coordinated development of secondary and higher vocational education.” Higher vocational education has been developing rapidly in our country. With the rapid increasing of higher vocational colleges, teaching researchers have paid more attention to the problems which Alternative Route students(AR students) have in learning, especially in classroom teaching of English reading. This prompts us to explore suitable English teaching methods to improve AR students’ English reading ability and applied level of English according to their characteristics. Higher vocational education will lay a solid foundation for teachers to cultivate students into technology applied talents.English reading is an important means of accumulating knowledge. It is also the basic guarantee for learners to improve their language skills of English. Improving English reading ability will help students to build critical thinking and innovation ability. Because of the rigid traditional English teaching model in higher vocational colleges and the teaching thought of eagerness for quick success and instant benefit, English reading teaching ignores AR students’ actual state. This directly leads to the low efficiency of classroom teaching. The author believes that task-based language teaching(TBLT) advocated by New Curriculum also has the reference significance for AR students’ English reading teaching. TBLT aims to make learners experience and learn the usage of language by participating in a series of activities. It emphasizes language’s practice of "learning by doing, using by learning". It can combine the form and meaning organically. It not only attaches great importance to the students’ ability and strategy training in the process of completing the task, also pays attention to participation and communication. AR students are good at practicing and communicating. TBLT can make their strengths more apparent. So it will help to cultivate their learning motivation and English reading skills. This thesis aims to analyze the actual state of AR students and their demands for English reading. Combining the problems of English reading teaching existing in the higher vocational colleges, the author will pertinently use TBLT in the practice of AR students’ English reading teaching. Comparing with the traditional English reading teaching, the author will verify the effectiveness of English reading for AR students and explore a new and effective method of English reading teaching. By a semester of the experimental teaching, the author has analyzed the data collected in EC(experimental class) and CC(control class) and referred to questionnaires and interviews. Then the author thinks that TBLT can effectively improve AR students’ English reading ability. The thesis is composed of seven chapters: Chapter One mainly introduces the study of background, purpose and significance about the model of task-based English reading teaching. It presents the frame structure of the thesis. Chapter Two is the literature review. It expounds AR students’ present learning situation of English reading and related researches at home and abroad. Chapter Three is the theoretical foundation. It expounds the origin and development of TBLT, related concepts of task and theoretical foundation. It compares different TBLT models and expounds the relevance between the theory of English reading teaching and TBLT. Chapter Four expounds the AR students’ demands for English reading and the problems in English reading teaching. It also expounds the applicability of TBLT in AR students’ English reading teaching. These will be the basic theory of carrying out applied research. Chapter Five presents the experimental design and process. It will provide the concrete teaching case. Chapter Six analyzes experimental data and discussion. This chapter expounds the influence of different teaching models for students’ scores and reading ability. It also expounds students’ feedback on task-based English reading teaching. Chapter Seven is the conclusion of the study and enlightenment to English reading teaching in the future. After profound reflection, this chapter points out the limitations of the applied research and presents some suggestions of AR students’ English reading teaching.
