Critical discourse analysis refers to a type of methodology which employs linguistic methods such as semantic, pragmatic and grammatical analyses, combined with social practice and social consciousness to uncover the hidden ideological factors. Based on the theoretical framework of Fairclough’s three-dimensional model, this thesis attempts to make a critical analysis of the 18th Communist Party of China(CPC)’s National Congress Report in combination with "the Chinese dream" --- the socialist ideological innovation since the 18th National Congress. Through the analyses from the three levels of textual description, interpretation and explanation, this thesis is dedicated in studying the corresponding political culture and dominant ideology in the current Chinese society. We find through the comparison and analyses in both diachronic and synchronic perspectives that clearly formulated and explained in the Report, which itself is a continuation of harmonious discourse, are the contemporary Chinese core socialist values embodying the essence of the socialist ideology and the Chinese dream as an important ideological innovation and both of them represent the new orientation of current Chinese political discourse. The contemporary Chinese core socialist values actually serve as a value guide of the Chinese dream. The ideological discourses which are reconstructed with the Chinese dream at the core have made a creative transformation of the discourse pattern. To express the abstract ideological contents in emotional forms, the 18th National Congress Report materializes the unification of common life and the nature of politics. Thus it not only guides the trend of social thought, but also helps to develop consensus or restore the common social identity. The harmonious, pragmatic features of the 18th National Congress, together with expressions of current dominant values manifest the more mature and confident attitude of the Communist Party of China.
