An Analysis Of American President Obama’s Speeches:A View From The Convergence Of Intercultural Communication

Intercultural communication has been studied for a long time at home and abroad, while the research on the convergence of intercultural communication has not attracted much attention and effort. Most of the researches on the convergence of intercultural communication are more inclined to focus on its forms, but little attention has been paid to speeches from the perspective of convergence.In view of this situation, this paper is based on American President Barack Hussein Obama’s speeches, and takes the convergence of intercultural communication as the theoretical framework to analyze Obama’s speeches. It intends to prove that using the convergence principles helps Obama succeed in speeches and achieve his political objectives.This paper is divided into six chapters. The first chapter shows the study background, significance of the study, purpose of the study, research plan and the whole organization of the thesis. The second chapter introduces the studies of Obama by domestic and foreign scholars and the features of Obama’s speeches. The third chapter shows the development of intercultural communication and the theoretical framework of the convergence theory in detail. In the fourth chapter, it takes Obama’s three different speeches in the USA, Germany and China respectively as examples, and introduces emphatically the convergence of intercultural communication used and reflected in president Obama’s speeches. In the fifth chapter, it analyzes the illumination of Obama’s speeches which shows the promotions of using the convergence of intercultural communication in his speeches and indicates the thing people need to pay attention to as they appreciate Obama’s speeches. The sixth chapter is a summary.This study is of theoretical and practical significance. As the theoretical framework of this thesis, the use of the principle of convergence provides a new perspective for the analysis of president Obama’s speeches. This research also has some significance for English learners.
