As the representative of Chinese classical gardens and a major tourist attraction of China, the classical gardens of Suzhou have attracted thousands of foreign visitors each year. Therefore, there is an urgent need for the translation of tourist materials of the classical gardens of Suzhou. The present translation practice is about two typical gardens-the Humble Administrator’s Garden and the Lingering Garden (the Liu’s Garden). Based on the writer’s own translation of the tourist materials of these two gardens, the present translation practice report introduces briefly the process of the completion of this translation task, discusses and analyzes the translation methods with practical examples, and summarizes the experiences gained from the translation practice. This report consists of four parts. The first part is an introduction of the purpose, the target readers and the meaning of this task. Meanwhile, it briefly introduces the present situation of the translation of tourist materials in China. The second part gives an overall introduction of the process of this translation practice task. In the pre-translating step, the original text is analyzed from two aspects: the content and the linguistic form. A lot of relative information and parallel texts are found before the present translation practice. In this part, it gives a brief introduction about the schedule and completion situation of this practice as well as the proofreading situation of the translation text in detail. The third part discusses the two main theories used in this translation practice and the translation principles the translator followed in the present translation practice. Under the guide of these two main principles, this part discusses the translation strategies used in the practice with specific examples. Translating the message is the main principle, which translating the culture is the secondary principle. This part also discusses three special problems that occurred in the translation practice--that is "the name of the scenic spots", "the title of the ancient figures" and "the architectural terms".The forth part is a conclusion. This part summarizes the experiences and inspirations gained during the translation practice, as well as the main strategy of tourist material translation, that is paraphrase.
