A Study On Cultural Transmission Of China English From The Perspective Of Memetics

English has undergone changes as a result of its contact with various languages in diverse cultural and geographical settings and it is bound to be localized and form various varieties (Kachru,1993). China English has come into being when English is integrated with Chinese culture. As a typical representative of English localization in China, not only does China English spread unique Chinese culture to the world, but it also makes a greater contribution to cultural transmission as it serves as a mediating function to strengthen cultural exchange and cultivate cultural fusion between China and the West. The thesis tries to study cultural transmission of China English from the perspective of memetics, especially focusing on transmission channels, dynamic performance and functions of China English as well as on how Chinese and western culture penetrates and fuses with each other in the light of China English.Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines memes as an idea, behavior, style, or usage that spreads from person to person within a culture. According to Dawkins (1976), meme is a basic unit of cultural transmission and memetics studies replication, transmission and revolution of memes. Further Dawkins (1976) puts forward three features of successful memes:fidelity, fecundity and longevity to bring light to a meme’s propagation capacity. On the basis of memetics and China English, on the one hand, the thesis analyzes the process, principles and introspection of transmission between China and the West. On the other hand, it studies the features of western culture and how it influences China. And it comes to a conclusion that China and the West should learn from each other and fuse together.Unique Chinese society and culture add vitality into English. It is important for linguists to further study China English systematically, objectively and scientifically and to distinguish China English from Chinese English. China English has Chinese features and Standard English as the core while Chinese English means a deformed English or hybrid English that is neither Chinese nor English. In this thesis, the author distinguishes China English from Chinese English from the perspective of acknowledgement and acceptance. Whether the parlance can be accepted and used by people who speak English is the key point to differ China English from Chinese English.The present study of cultural transmission of China English from the perspective of memeties is a tentative one. But we hope to draw attention to cultural transmission and fusion between China and the West by the aid of China English, which is of great prospect and value in external association.
