This thesis, based on Danes’ thematic progression pattern theory, discusses the translation strategies and thematic progression patterns of academic discourses with the case study of the translation of the second and third chapters of Landmarks in Linguistic Thought: the Western Tradition from Socrates to Saussure.During the translation process of academic discourses, in order to exactly convey the original meaning and emphasize the acceptability of the translation, the author should pay attention to the characteristics of academic discourses, therefore, the author attempts to choose Danes’ thematic progression pattern theory to classify and translate the source discourse. And this thesis classifies the original discourse into four types: linear theme pattern, constant theme pattern, spring theme pattern and split rheme pattern. This thesis puts forward two kinds of translation methods to solve the problems in the translation of academic discourses: retain or adjust the thematic progression pattern of the original discourse. For adjusting the thematic progression pattern of the original discourse, the author uses adjustment method and separation method. This thesis discusses the thematic progression patterns and translation strategies of the second and third chapters of Landmarks in Linguistic Thought: the Western Tradition from Socrates to Saussure, but it can provide guidance and reference meaning for other academic discourses’ translation.
