On The Translation Of Dialogue In Wings From The Perspective Of Contextual Adaption Theory

Wings is selected from Lorrie Moore’s short stories,Bark, who is a very famous writer. It mainly tells a story about a couple, KC and Dench, who flatter old Milt in order to come into his money to save their music career.Dialogue is a feature of Wings, occupying a large part of whole contents. Dialogue reflect the characters ’ characteristics, there are also background changes, scene transitions and cross talks in the dialogue. In addition, the language of the dialogue is humorous by using some culture-loaded words and idioms, there are some humors of context of situation either. Adaptation theory, a term proposed by the famous Belgium linguist, the secretary general of the International Pragmatic Association, Jef Verschueren, refers to the dynamic adaption of the linguistic context and language structure. The thesis intends to analyze the translation Wings from the perspective of communicative context and linguistic context of the Contextual Adaption Theory.As to the translation methods, the thesis points out that when translating novel dialogue, literal translation is an effective translation strategy of simple dialogue and the structure of syntax and text. While coping with culture-loaded words and idioms, literal translation with notes, paraphrase, liberal translation and traslate can be adopted. Though the thesis tackles only with the translation of dialogue in the novel Wings, it hopes that some inspirations may be expected to be provided to other literary translations.
