On The Translation Of Dong Qiao’s Once From The Perspective Of Manifest Intertextuality

The Story of the Stone, Whisper, the Affair in Mr. Nianqing’s Room, the Exquisite Jade and Memory in Snowing Days are chosen from Dong Qiao’s book Once. Based on his knowledge of traditional Chinese culture and taste, Mr. Dong recollected the past events in natural words.Based on Fairclough’s intertextuality classification, the thesis intends to analyze the translation of Once from the perspectives of “manifest intertextuality”. This thesis first introduces the related theory of intertextuality and the relationship between intertextuality and translation. Secondly, it analyzes the examples from the perspectives of “manifest intertextuality”. Thirdly, it tells how the author translates the whole passage. Finally, the thesis argues that the manifest intertextuality theory has a far-reaching significance to text translation.At last the thesis points out that when translating the highly intertextual texts, retain, substitute, and reduce the iniertextual space are the effective translation strategies. Though the thesis tackles only with the translation of manifest intertextual signs in Dong Qiao’s book Once, it hopes that some inspirations may be expected to be provided to other literary translations.
