Genre is the Variation type of language function formed in the long-term process of language use.Genre words are specially and commonly used in certain genre. This paper is going to focus on the genre words——the smallest units of genre analysis,and inspect the cognitive status on the 36 genre words of 100 international students at advanced stage coming from three universities by questionnaire.According to the results of the investigation, on the whole,the cognitive level on the 36 genre words of 100 international students at advanced stage is basically staying at the primary level of “Sensation”and“Perception”.Only in accordance with the survey data of four types of genre words, students’ cognition of the genre words of science is commonly good,and the cognition of the genre words of the spoken language is relatively optimistic. But,on the genre words of literary and the genre words of the official document,the cognition of the international students at advanced stage has certain deviation and the cognitive level is relatively low.No matter on the primary cognitive level of “Sensation”and“Perception”or on the cognitive level of”Image”,the cognitive ability of the genre words of the official document of the international students at advanced stage are both weak,in addition, their ability of genre and writing with the genre words of the official document is also lacking.Overall, the international students at advanced stage haven’t build the cognitive framework and image of the genre words.Their cognition of the genre words is basically staying at the primary level and their genre ability and genre consciousness are both weak.
