Seven Color Nightmare are some unpublished essays of Shen Congwen’s in 1940 s, including seven articles,such as Water and cloud, Green Nightmare, White Nightmare, Black Nightmare, Cyan Nightmare, Orange Nightmare, and Red Nightmare,ect. This thesis based on Seven Color Nightmareas and centred on background of 40 s, on the basis of Shen Congwen’s abstract thinking of individual and the value of human life, this thesis aims to exploit out of Shen Congwen’s predicament life and breakthrough way in 40 s, explore the artistic features of experimental works during this period, and then explain Shen Congwen’s mentally confusion. The thesis can be divided into three chapters except the introduction and epilogue.The first chapter is the background of Seven color Nightmare in social context and individual context. The turmoil of the Anti-Japanese War and the kuomintang dictatorship, monetary policy, the literary and artistic policy made shen congwen face multiple difficulties: writing environment, economic life, target of writing. Shen Congwen’s individual emotional experience, family problems, and the teaching experience has profoundly affected the creation of the Seven color Nightmare.The second chapter studies Shen Congwen’s predicament and breakthrough in life. According to the study, the author found out Shen Congwen was a writer with introspection consciousness. He wrote from individual emotional experience, writing experience and social scene personnel, metaphysical thinking individual life and the confusion of human life, and to break through the plight of the admiration of life consciousness as a life style in Seven color Nightmare. This autonomous consciousness to explore and worship life fully illustrates Shen Congwen is a experimentalist.The third chapter studies the experimental art characteristics of Seven color Nightmare. Shen Congwen was attacted by the war in Kunming, he was forced to live in this island of Yunnan Chenggong. Isolated existence and mental space made him live with nature and books. The story of the Seven color Nightmare’s space form also presents the characteristics of closure. Closed space form also profoundly affected Shen Congwen’s narrative view, the character, protagonist, and author in Seven color Nightmare also appear the characteristics of the trinity.
