The continuous development of teaching equipments and means effectively promote the development of English teaching reform, and how to make the English listening teaching effectively under the environment of multimedia teaching has become a major task faced by many English teachers. Due to the intuitive and vivid effect of original English films, there are more and more teachers trying to use the original movies in English listening teaching. This thesis is aimed to explore the effect of using original movies in English listening teaching under the perspective of constructivism. This thesis includes six chapters. Chapter 1 is the introduction; this chapter introduces research background, research purpose, research questions, and the organization of the thesis. Chapter 2 is the theoretical foundation. Chapter 3 is literature review. Constructivism and its enlightenment to teaching are introduced in this chapter. Chapter 4 introduces the research questions, participants, research tools, and the procedures of the experiment teaching. Chapter 5 is about the findings and discussions on the defects of the teaching experiment and reasons, and also the inspiration of teaching experiment. Chapter 6 is the conclusion of the research study. In this chapter, the value and significance of the study are expounded, and limitations of the research are analyzed. The experimental teaching is mainly to verify and explore the following questions:(1) What is the feasibility of the original English films used in listening teaching?(2) Which method is better to improve students’ listening ability, using the original English films as teaching materials or practicing by the traditional way?(3) Would it improve students’ interest in listening learning by using the original English films in teaching?(4) Would it improve students’ learning motivation and self-regulation of learning by using the original English films in teaching? In order to study the effect of the original English films in listening the author carried out a quasi-experimental study in GuiZhou Normal College. The study was about to start from September 2014 to January 2015, lasting for about five months, but the actual experimental practice lasted only about three months for some reasons. Two classes were selected as class 1, the experimental class, class 2, the control group. For the experimental class 1, the listening course was a film-based English teaching. For the control class 2, the listening course was a traditional listening instruction. Both the experimental group and control group had taken the pre-test and post-test, and the SPSS software was used to analyze data collected. The final experiment results show that there are little significant differences between the two groups. It can’t explain which method is better as for the traditional listening teaching and film-based listening teaching. The less successful experiment was due to the following factors: there was not enough time, the tests were too difficult for the freshmen, the materials selected were improper, and the author’s research capacity was limited. Though the experiment does not meet the initial design requirements, it does show obvious promotion in both of the two classes’ listening scores and provide some guidance for listening teaching in the future. A further analysis and reflection on the experimental teaching is needed.
