This thesis is a study on Gary Snyder’s translation of the Cold Mountain poems from an ecological pe rspective. It probes into how Snyder’s ecological views influence the whole process of his translation, including his selection of the text, his choice of the proper methods in his translation and the impact of his translation in America. Firstly, through a comparative analysis of the sim ilarities between Han Shan and Snyder, this thesis comes up with the finding that Snyder’s ecological views and the poetic features of the Cold Mount ain poems conduct him to select the twenty-four poems among a total of more than three hundred. And then, based on studies on the themes, styl e and language of the translated poems, this thesis draws a conclusi on that Snyder ’s translation ful ly embodies his ecological views. Th e canonization of his translation afterwards serves as a good evidence for his excellent rendering, it s impact and prevalence in America. Besi des, it is also expected that more attention can be drawn to the study on Han Shan’s poems as well as on the translation of other classical Chinese poems.
