A Study Of Creative Treason In Gary Snyder's Translation Of Han Shan Poetry From The Perspective Of Medio-translatology

Han Shan,a monk poet in Tang Dynasty,has long been marginalized in Chinese literature history.Though full of life philosophy,Han Shan Poetry has remained obscure for more than a thousand years owing to overuse of proverbs but lack of rhythm and cadence,which is contrary to the orthodox Chinese culture.However,thanks to successful translation by the famous American poet Gary Snyder,Han Shan Poetry has achieved unprecedented welcome overseas.Revered as “Counterculture Pioneer” by the Beat Generation,Han Shan has become a spiritual idol of the American youth generation and his poetry blossoms as a classic in American translation literature.The phenomenon of American canonization has also attracted the attention of a large number of scholars in China and set off a research upsurge on Han Shan and his poetry creation and translation texts.On the basis of medio-translatology theory,the writer tries to study Han Shan's poems translated by Gary Snyder,and deeply analyzes the concrete manifestation of creative treason in the English translation process.The “creative treason” was first proposed by the French literary sociologist Robert Escarpit,while the scholar who noticed this concept earlier in China was Professor Xie Tianzhen.He pointed out that the so-called creativity is a kind of subjective effort of the translator to use artistic creation to approach and reproduce the original work;while treason is an objective deviation from the original work,reflected in the translation process by translator in order to achieve a certain subjective desire.This kind of creativity and treason often combine to an inseparable and harmonious organism in literary translation,namely creative treason.Through analysis of poetry text characteristics,American social background and Snyder's personal experience,the writer elaborates on creative treason in the translation of Han Shan Poetry with examples,then further explore Snyder's translation strategies so that readers can better appreciate the charm and glory of Han Shan Poetry and experience its classicization in America.The writer also hopes that through this thesis,more and more experts and scholars will be attracted to the translation of Chinese classical poetry and contribute to cultural exchanges between China and the West.
