By methods of questionnaire, interview and test method, this paper made a research on general situation of Chinese learning strategy, Chinese vocabulary and lexical competence of 40 students in Chinese major from Walailak University, made statistics and analysis by using Excel and, combined with the reality of students from Thailand, raised some constructive suggestions for efficiently improving vocabulary learning ability by upgrading their vocabulary learning strategy.It has been found that the most strategy that junior students from Thailand may use in their vocabulary learning is social strategy, and the next(with Medium frequency) is cognitive strategy and compensation strategy, while affective strategies is the least. Secondly, as to vocabulary test, most students have their vocabularies of about 2300~4400, the vocabularies of whom with the largest vocabulary acquisition is 4765. Chinese race, as well as some Chinese-speaking fans, has the most vocabularies. Finally, as to vocabulary test, most students have lower level of test results for lexical competence than for vocabulary itself. By this result, we clearly come to realize that most students could only be familiar with, know, and remember the spelling and pronunciation of the vocabularies, while few of them could master the correct applications and ways of usage of the vocabularies.How could the situation happen? It is mainly because the students from Thailand have little awareness of learning strategy for Chinese vocabulary, or little knowledge of Chinese language. Also, they focus quite much on listening and speaking Chinese, while they take little notice of developing a habit of reading and writing, which is also the reason for the inconformity between vocabulary and lexical competence, and for the bad master of the meaning of vocabulary.By the analysis of the researched results, this paper suggested Chinese teachers help their students develop an awareness of vocabulary learning strategy form a general knowledge of Chinese language, and then, with a proper guidance in the class, help them develop a good habit of reading and writing, thus providing assistance of establishment of Chinese vocabulary learning strategy of their own step by step. The teachers could introduce and recommend some excellent books to the students, which may widen their horizon. Finally, the teacher shall help students find out their goals of learning, and then make them set up their own learning strategy of Chinese vocabulary.
