A Study On The Washback Of CET-4 Listening Test Upon Students’ English Listening Learning

College English Test Bank 4(CET-4) is a large-scale test to measure English level of college and university students who do not major in English in China.However, the number of researches about CET-4 that are conducted empirically about CET-4 is not big. The number of researches on listening part of CET-4 from the perspective of students is even smaller. This thesis plans to make a study about the washback of CET-4 listening test(CET-4 LT) upon English listening learning of college and university students.The study was conducted through questionnaire, classroom observation and interviews. The author collected data from 184 non-English major students of Jining Medical College and dealt with the data with SPSS 19.0.Through this study, the author found that CET-4 LT exerts strong washback on students’ English listening learning, including the following aspects: preparation time,learning materials, learning objectives, learning content, learning attitudes and learning methods and activities for the CET-4 LT. Besides, the washback can be both positive and negative and the positive washback outweighs the negative one. On the one hand, the CET-4 LT helps students realize the importance of English listening learning and then makes them pay more attention to it; the preparation for it improves students’ overall English proficiency; it provides students with a way to check students’ listening level and at them same time helps them find their strong points and weak points, which leads students to adjust their learning methods accordingly. On the other hand, that CET-4 LT is becoming more and more difficult brings students too much pressure mentally. As a result, students’ enthusiasm about English listening learning is suppressed then.
