On Reporting Verbs In Chinese And English News Discourse

Since reporting verbs constitute the direct context of quotation and have the function of predicting and controlling reported speech that follows, the study of reporting verbs become a very important aspect of the study of reported speech. So far, only a few scholars have compared the news discourse with different languages from the perspective of CDA. Therefore, this paper will compare the reporting verbs in the news of two languages about one event----"Chicago Teachers’ Strike". We select 16 news discourses from《环球时报》,《北京日报》,《广州日报》,New York Times as samples. All of them are about Chicago Teachers’ Strike. We will compare the differences in the use of reporting verbs between two languages and answer the questions:(1) In what way do the news reports in two languages differ from each other in terms of the reporting verbs? (2) What are the reasons of those differences? (3) How can the differences account for from a CDA perspective? We hope that this research will be able to offer some insightful or illuminating ideas to the future study of reporting verbs in different languages.
