In recent years, the Content-Based Instruction, as a new teaching approach and concept has become a widely adopted pedagogical approach and aroused more attention at home and abroad. Since 1970 s, the focus of research has turned from "how to teach" to "how to learn" in the field of foreign language teaching, factors of language learners have been attached a lot of importance to, foreign language anxiety(FLA) is one of them.Especially in higher vocational college, the phenomenon of FLA is more serious. However, the empirical studies related to the higher vocational college students is rare in China, especially about the social sport major students, there is almost none research. Therefore, my paper is to make an empirical research about the effect of CBI on the social sports major students. The author believes that this study can provide reference and inspiration for the English Teachers of social sports major in higher vocational college.A four-month experiment is conducted in Shijiazhuang Vocational College of Scientific and Technical engineering. The subjects are 90 students from two classes of second grade in the social sports major. They are taught in the traditional English class and content-based instruction class respectively for one semester. The Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale(FLCAS) and an interview are adopted in the quantitative study and the final data was analyzed by software of Statistical Package for Social Sciences 19.0(SPSS). The qualitative study was an interview, ten students were chosen from the treatment group to attend the interview in order to get some additional attitudes and ideas as supplement to the quantitative results.From the results of quantitative and qualitative analysis, the following conclusions can be drawn to answer the research questions proposed in Chapter one:(1) students in the treatment group have lowered FLA significantly compared with these of the control group. In other words, CBI can significantly decrease the students’ FLA.(2) there is negative correlation between FLA and English proficiency. CBI has a positive effect to reduce learners’ FLA of different achievements, among whom the learners of intermediate level made the greatest improvement than the students of low and high levels of English proficiency.(3) there is not significant difference of FLA between male and female students except for on some items.The results are satisfactory, but for some subjective and objective reasons, there are still some deficiencies and weaknesses in the thesis to be improved in the future study.
