Since the introduction of modern piano into China, a group of outstanding piano educators and musicians have made remarkable contributions to the development of China’s piano education. Piano educators such as Zhou Guangren, Dan Zhaoyi, and Zhou Mingsun, as well as piano musicians like Yin Chengzong, Liu Shikun, Lang Lang, Li Yundi, Chen Sa, Wang Yujia, and etc., have greatly propelled the development of China’s piano industry and its international status. With the progress of society and educational psychology research, children piano education, as the foundation of piano education, has been under enormous impact imposed by new ethos. On the one hand, the teacher-centered traditional children piano education is transitioning to the student-centered methodology, where the students take the proactive role of constructing knowledge, and the teacher act as the helper and facilitator of that process. On the other hand, increasing numbers of young piano students and their parents don’t obsess with the improvement of piano playing techniques no more; instead, they put more emphasis on the acquirement of accompaniment improvisation, arrangement skill, and other integrated musical knowledge. Meanwhile, children do not want to go over the individual classes as what the traditional piano education proceeds, but experience and learn about the music in the form of group classes, which are more relaxing and joyful. This required teachers not only to adjust and modify their teaching mindsets, but also enrich their teaching modes and enhance teaching skills to adapt to the present children piano education. Additionally, the defects of existing piano educational institution ought to be readjusted. In the first chapter The Present Status and Problems of Children Piano Education, the thesis starts from analyzing the issues. In the second chapter The Transformation of Teachers, Children, and Parents in Children’s Piano Education, the thesis provides solution suggestions. The musical educational organizations have played a larger role in the development of the musical education in our society. However, problems and conflicts emerge as well. Firstly, the gap between what the societal expectation and the reality of the qualifications for musical educational institution is noticeable, which creates problems such as inadequate social supervision, loose teacher’s management and teaching regulations. As a consequence, the quality of education is risky, and the incompetence in advocating and operating leads to insufficient register numbers and revenue allocation disagreement between the teachers and the institution. Secondly, the lack of contact between social musical education and common school musical education and family musical education, as well as the inadequate of charity nature, also reduces the status of social musical education. In the third chapter The Problems and Solutions for the Social Musical Educational Institutions, the thesis starts with analyzing the six problems mentioned above, provides suggestions for exploring a path of “balance educational ideal and charity principle, with an emphasis on commercial interest” for social musical educational institutions. In the fourth chapter, the thesis discusses the professionalization and de-professionalization of children’s piano education and elaborates on the significance of the complementary role of integrated music courses to children’s piano education. Also, it provides suggestions to solving the problems of teaching methodology and modes in children’s piano education. The thesis aims to provide suggestions to the transformation of teaching methodology and modes for children’s piano education, as well as a path of “balance educational ideal and charity principle, with an emphasis on commercial interest ” for social musical educational institutions.
