The object of this paper is the unearthed Western Zhou Proto-porcelain of the Northern China. At first,we have a detailed review of the main types of the proto-porcelain during the Western Zhou period in the Western Zhou cultural region and research the typical with the archaeological typology. Based on the type division and combined with the unearthed unit of time, we divide the development into two phases: the early Western Zhou Dynasty、the late Western Zhou Dynasty, and summarize the characteristic of the types and decoration of the proto-porcelain in the different period. Then we have a study on the distribution situation of the proto-porcelain: from early to late, the distribution range shrinks with the types and quantity reduce. Through the analysis of the cultural factors, we believe the north proto-porcelain and the south proto-porcelain has cultural exchange in the Western Zhou period. Maybe some proto-porcelain is transported from south China. Through classify the tombs which includes proto-porcelain into five grades, we find that, from early to late, the third and fourth grade have the largest percentage and the fifth grade appears in the late. We count and analyze the combination of the proto-porcelain at different grades in different regions, the proto-porcelain combination of the Central Shaanxi Area is simple and the Dou is regular thing, while the combination of Luoyang region is complicated and the individual is little. Then we have a study on the function of covers and speculate they may be used on the Dou which has a small pot in, the lei, vat or vase and so on. In the end, we get the classification of the tombs which are well-preserved and have statistics on the locating place and the assemblage of the proto-porcelain. On the basis of this, we think the proto-porcelain is precious which may be buried with the dead as sacrificial vessel or treasured articles of daily use, some even is used in the ritual activities, but it did not form fixed combination.
