Paul Klee(1879—1940) is an important artist in a variety of domains of art in the development of western modern art and he is generally considered as a versatile all-rounder as a painter, poet, musician and food critic. With a mystic and seemingly innocent drawing style as well as art theories which derive from the practice, Paul Klee has made immeasurable contributions to the progress of western modern art. Embarking on mature painting language and art theory, he has opened up the new way to art and in the meanwhile has created precious examples and successful practice experience. Up to now, his works are still simulated and further processed by multiple realms of art in various degree and his art theories still possess certain effectiveness and universality. Based on the in-depth searching and reading of relevant document materials, this thesis adopts image analysis method to analyze the coated painting series Invention, in the hope of extensively exploring the art language and expressive form of this masterpiece and accordingly revealing the core factor of core painting series art in contemporary engraving art and painting art.This thesis is composed of three chapters. The first chapter briefly discusses about the artistic life of Paul Klee, centering around the stylistic differences of engraving art in different periods as well as its transitional function in art history. The second chapter is the main part of this thesis which analyzes the main factors influencing Paul Klee’s art creation from three perspectives including the growth environment, musical quality and overseas study in Italy. At the same time, the art concepts of coated painting creation are also presented in order to further illustrate its art language and expressive characteristics pursuant to modeling language,scene rhythm, visual performance and image composition. Combined with personal practice,the third chapter critically relates the author’s reference from the creation experience and techniques of masters and enlightenments for art creation practice.
