The Imperial Power And Intelligentsia Of The Southern Dynasty

During the period, the Imperial Power in Eastern Jin Dynasty was in dejection. The normal implementation of policies about state affairs, military affairs and civil administration relied on Intelligentsia. As LIU Yu came to power and the establishment of Liusong Dynasty, the situation started to change.The Southern Dynasties is a special phase in China history. The Imperial Power and the Intelligentsia were intertwined. Liusong Dynasty was the first dynasty of the Southern Dynasties, which inherited the disadvantages of the leadership rendered ineffectual by recalcitrant subordinates of hereditary gentry in Eastern Jin Dynasty. The Imperial Power faced many challenges of the Intelligentsia. However, Liusong Dynasty was built up on military exploit, so the Emperor had the absolute control rights on most military. It had a positive effect on promoting the Imperial Power and maintaining the majesty of the Imperial Power. In the earlier stage of Liusong Dynasty, the Imperial Power and the Intelligentsia were in the opposite situation, and the Song Emperor Xiaowu used the compulsive means of slaughter to impel the Intelligentsia’s submission, which caused the rigid relationship between the Imperial Power and the Intelligentsia. The Intelligentsia adopted avoidance of politics for self-protection.In the Southern Qi Dynasty, Xiaoshi was born in distinguished families and didn’t have the sense of inferiority of Liushi. What’s more, she didn’t have much gulf with the Intelligentsia in the field of spirit and culture. So Xiaoshi of South Qi cooperated with the Intelligentsia to mitigate the opposite relationship between the Intelligentsia and the Imperial Power. Later the Southern Liang Dynasty inherited the method of the Southern Qi Dynasty. They not only strengthened the cooperation with the Intelligentsia, but also developed the Imperial Power to the way of Intelligentsia. The last Southern Chen Dynasty was established based on Houjing Reallion and Jiangling Battle. At the time, the Intelligentsia was suffered great strike and was unable to contend with the Imperial Power. The Southern Chen Dynasty kept treating preferentially and absorbing the Intelligentsia in order to stable the political situation. So till the Southern Chen Dynasty, the Imperial Power and the Intelligentsia started to integrate, and finally formed integration by the time of the last Emperor of Chen.This article is mainly divided to four chapters. The first chapter mainly illustrates the Imperial Power’s winning and taking down towards the Intelligentsia in order to control the Intelligentsia effectively in the Liusong Dynasty. In the second chapter, the Imperial Power started to cooperate with the Intelligentsia gradually. The third chapter is mainly about that the Imperial Power started to develop into the way of Intelligentsia in the Xiaoliang Period. The fourth chapter mainly illustrates that the Intelligentsia finally integrated with the Imperial Power in the Southern Chen Dynasty. The article explores the delicate changes by discussing the process from opposition at the beginning into cooperation and finally into integration between the Imperial Power and the Intelligentsia during the whole Southern Dynasty.
