Study On Art Language Of Georges Rouault

Georges Rouault, a great artist, was active in French art circle from the late 19 th century to the early 20 th century. His early painting style was considerably influenced by his teacher Moro. As a devout Catholic, religious feelings run through his works all the time, although the painting style and theme were always in change. In addition to religious feelings, his works were also filled with compassionate human feelings. Several changes of Georges Rouault’s painting style are studied in the paper, research methods of progressive, comparison and interdisciplinary integration are adopted in the paper.Georges Rouault’s art language is analyzed through the research of his different themes of woks in different stages or the works in the same theme in various stages. During the period of significant reform in painting, Georges Rouault still believed in predecessors,and adhered to the self and persistence of art. He has a great influence on later artists,especially on expressionism painting. Combined with the practical condition of China, the influence of Georges Rouault on contemporary Chinese paintings is analyzed in the last chapter, including the influence on Lin Fengmian, a Chinese master, and the contemporary artist Duan Zhengqu, which has a certain role in promoting Chinese art. Georges Rouault’s art feelings and historical status are discussed. The paper aims to establish a comprehensive understanding of Georges Rouault for art creators and amateurs.
