Digital technology has been in a rapid development period since the end of 20th century that its widespread use in art field gives an enormous impact to the Chinese traditional culture and art. However, the Chinese traditional culture and art also obtains a new development opportunity from the collisions and adaptations with digital technology, among which the ink and wash painting makes a good try in animation area. Nowadays, with the development of new digital technology more and more Chinese animators are trying to create ink and wash animations by using computers or other digital technology operation platforms, who intend to revive the resplendence that the ink and wash animation used to have and get some achievements as well. Hope this research makes more animators to deepen their understandings and affections on ink and wash animation and to devote themselves to promote its development, which as a result will be a contribution to this national animation type.This thesis first reviewed the development of ink animation, identified constraints ink animation development because of the cumbersome process of traditional production method, which could use modern digital technology to overcome. Then it summarized and analyzed the main design elements of ink animation pointing out that a good ink animation should work in composition, color, and other aspects must follow traditional ink drawing tricks and retains its unique charm. On the other hand, an ink and wash animation short film named WHO CAN BE ARROGANT is created by using digital software such as Photoshop, Flash, After Effects and so on, which achieves the integration of practice and theory. During the creation process, varieties of drawing techniques were tried out and recorded. Eventually the whole animation as well as this thesis is successfully completed. By this research project, it is demonstrated that the difficulty of creating ink and wash animations is higher than normal ones because the special artistry of ink and wash paintings is required in addition to the same creation standards of normal animations.
