China needs more professional translators in the translational area of railway sciences and technologies in order to help the world know more about the China railway. The Railway transport of long and large goods in China is the first professional book about the railway transport of heavy duty goods in China, and a good material for practices. Therefore,10,388 Chinese are extracted from the Railway transport of long and large goods in China to translate into English as a case of study. The railway sciences and technologies play an important role in national economy, whereas the total work of translational study of railway sciences and technologies in our country is very small. By making relevant tables and reading references, this paper analyses the condition that as a non-literary genre, the railway scientific text can also be translated from Chinese to English in guidance of functional equivalence theory by making advantages of translation methods and strategies, such as direct translation and inverse translation, etc.. The writer proposes to put some translating advices and experience in railway scientific and technological work translation under the framework of functional equivalence theory in Railway transport of long and large goods in China excerpt. The functional equivalence theory emphasizes the communication and understanding of the translation. What it stresses first is the equivalence in meaning between the source text and the translation, and then is in the form. The theory classifies the equivalence into four levels:the words, the sentences, the paragraphs and the style. At the same time, the translation of railway science and technology needs to definitely transfer the special information of the original text. Accurate understanding is more important in this translation than the beauty in form. The railway science and technology works have characteristics of many terms, long sentences, and strong logic and so on. Special meanings are always endowed in the ordinary words. In the words’ level, it involves the translation of terms, abbreviations and noun phrases; in the sentences’level, it is related to the translation of voice conversion, the translation of long sentences or simple sentences and so on; in the paragraphs’level, it covers the tenses and cohesion. Translation should be made according to the stylistic features and specific requirements of railway science and technology works, which conforms to the description cf functional equivalence theoiy in considering functional and formal equivalence in the concrete situations. Thus, stylistic features from a big picture perspective was analyzed, then translation methods and strategies are respectively discussed from the aspects of words, sentences and paragraphs to study the railway scientific text in guidance of functional equivalence. This work involves six parts. The first part is an brief introduction, which tells the study background、study methods and the meanings of study. The third part is the introduction of Functional Equivalence Theory, which involves the basic conceptions of the theory, the development of the theory and the conformity of the theory to be used in the translation of railway scientific and technological works. The fourth part tells the features of the text. In this part, the writer introduces the content of the Railway transport of long and large goods in China excerpt and the features of the style.
