Recent years, studies on A Dream of Red Mansions have become a trend. Thousands of scholars do research on the translation of this novel from various perspectives.Though many scholars study the conversations between the characters,it is noticed that studying the utterances of the characters still belongs to a new field.Chinese Yuqi is different from the English mood system, because Chinese Yuqi is unique and there’s no counterpart in English. One major way to express Yuqi is the Sentence-final particle(SFP) which is the main branch of modal particles. Sentence-final particle is a remarkable mark of Chinese Yuqi which is totally different from the English mood system. In interpersonal relationship, this kind of empty words plays an important role in revealing the status and characteristics of the participants. In a word, Sentence-final particles embody various kinds of interpersonal meaning. So, to some extent, whether the interpersonal meaning of the original text is maintained plays an important role in the quality of the translation. Therefore studying Chinese Sentence-final particles is especially significant to the studies of the cross-cultural transference of interpersonal meaning.Studies on Chinese modal particles at home and abroad mainly focus on discussing translation strategies and evaluating the gains and losses during the process. So interpersonal meaning serves a new perspective to the study of the translation of Chinese Sentence-final particles.Besides, value of modality relates to power and solidarity. So through value of modality and power and solidarity,we can have a new insight of the translation of Chinese Sentence-final particles.Taking Wang Xifeng’s utterances as examples, this thesis analyzes the translation of Sentence-final particles in the version of A Dream of Red Mansions by Yang Hsien-yi and his wife Gladys Yang, from the perspective of interpersonal meaning combined with power and solidarity. And through the study on the Sentence-final particles in Xifeng’s utterances in this thesis, I try to do some research on the cross-cultural reconstruction of interpersonal meaning and provide some formal study on the translation of Chinese Sentence-final particles.
