In the end of 2014, the young composer Zhu Lin composed a Pipa quartet work named Cangcai for Yang Jing Chamber Orchestra. The work is inspired by some elements from Beijing Opera`s gong and drum and performed by 4 Pipa to imitate Beijing Opera`s percussion instruments which are clappers, big gong, small gong and cymbals. To perform this work, it is necessary to have a high level of coordination between different parts including the mastery of tones, the harmony of intensity and highly precise tempo. Therefore, it requires all performers from each part to master a high level of performing skill. Through the rehearsals, the author realizes that it is essential to explore deeply in the field of musical language and develop diverse tones and sound effect in a larger scale.Based upon Cangcai, this article will analyze how to apply the elements of traditional Chinese folk music through Pipa and its form of display. The text includes two aspects of the following:the analysis of the work and performing. As one of the chamber members, I wish I would offer the first-hand information to those who would perform and study this piece.
