Lives of Girls and Women is considered to be an important Canadian Bildungsroman and a unique contribution to young adult novels. Before this novel, there are few growth novels that thoroughly documented female adult processes and the complex rituals of girls. Lives of Girls and Women is a typical bildungsroman in terms of its structure and intention.The novel shows originality in character setting,environment and narration.Lives of Girls and Women is a masterpiece of Nineteenth Century in Canada, created by Alice Munro, Based on the analysis of the background of Canada, this dissertation attempts to explore the initiation theme and its constitutes of this work and how the initiation theme is visualized,in order to comment on the status and influence of the work.The first Part of this thesis analyzes the concept of growing up. The second part mainly discusses the composition of the growth theme. Mainly analyze the Growing confusion and the growth of female consciousness. The growing confusion is divided into three parts, that is, belief, death,emotional maturity and love.The third Part of the thesis through “guidance” and “epiphany” to analyze of the characters in this novel.The last part mainly analyzed the uniqueness and creation of the theme of growth. Mainly analyze the theme of growth different from the tradition and social realities of this novel.
