From the perspective of Center and Surroundings, we may regard Mohist School’s thoughts as one of the surroundings of the Confucian school’s thoughts. And the surrounding had made much influence on the center, Mo-tse criticized Confucius, and the comments were quite related with the core doctrine of Confucius. So the comments became some of Mo-tse’s core doctrine. What left to Mencius was how to respond to the comments raised by Mo-tse, and these became some of the core doctrine of Mencius. Without to say, Mencius’ thoughts are based on Confucius’ thoughts, so Mencius’ criticisms about Mo-tse were to defend Confucius. We must affirm Mo-tse’ contribution to Confucianism. Regardless of the limits of schools, we even can say Mo-tse acted as an intermediate between Confucius and Mencius.
