| Audiovisual translation prospers with the frequent cross-border and cross-cultural communication. The diversified distribution channels of audiovisual translation products boosted by information technology and new media, as well as the multi-modal and multi-semiotic features of audiovisual texts have posed challenges for translation practice and study of the time. As an important branch of audiovisual translation, which is an umbrella term, film translation has a long history. Under the category of film translation, subtitling has replaced dubbing and become a widely accepted and popular form of communication.This translation task is subtitling for "The BIG Talk Summit: Smart Society and Beyond" broadcasted on domestic video portal iQIYI, aiming at spreading cutting-edge scientific achievements and looking into smart society in the future. This translation report reviews the translation task in detail, analyzes typical examples in accordance with multi-text and multi-modal features of audiovisual translation and summarizes solutions for difficulties encountered in translation practice.Based on features of subtitling and case study of examples selected from the translation text, the following conclusions are drawn in this report:(1) at textual level, translators must guarantee accuracy and coherence of the target text; (2) at spatiotemporal level, translators must pay attention to the limited number of characters, the use of punctuations and the cutting of timeline under the limit of time and space on the screen; (3) at multi-modal level, translators must improve translation quality to generate a pleasant viewing experience for the audience according to the requirement of integrating words, images and sounds of the video as a whole.The significance of this report lies in the referential value for subtitling project management and subtitling practice. Besides, it also tries to encourage translators in the audiovisual sector to make self-improvement to promote their career development. |
